Completed Contents Page

After drafting my contents page I managed to create an effective layout, using a bold central image that immediately catches the readers eye. I used a basic colour scheme of black red and white to ensure it was not too busy and fit in with the rest of my magazine, the main model on the page is also wearing these colours. By referencing my research I have tried to follow the typical structure and conventions of a music magazine contents page, for example working in columns and having smaller images along side the main photograph.

Magazine Contents Page Photos

To add to my contents page, I have used some of my own photos from concerts and I plan to use these as a 'gig photography' element of my magazine, as well as include them on my contents page as smaller imagery.

Contents Page Plan

Before starting to produce my contents page I have designed a plan to ensure the page is well set out and looks professional. I have also selected a contents page from a well known magazine to look at and work from.

Completed Magazine Cover

I have looked at and researched some professional music magazine covers and referenced them whilst producing my own. I have followed the typical features and conventions of a magazine cover, including elements such as the large main image, a masthead, taglines and a puff advertising something in the magazine.
I kept the page minimalistic to ensure it didn't seem over crowded, and also stuck to the colour theme of my magazine, red, white and black.

Editing Photos

After editing my selected photo in photoshop by removing any marks as well as playing with the exposure and curves, I cut the model out and removed the grey background to give my magazine cover a white base.

Photoshoot Two Contact Sheet

When taking photos for my magazine front cover I looked at professional magazines beforehand and considered elements such as angle, posing and lighting. I took a selection of photos to ensure I could choose the best photo for my magazine front cover.

Magazine Front Cover Plan

Before starting to design my magazine front cover I have made a plan using an example to emulate. I have done this to ensure the layout of my cover is effective and I use the correct conventions and features for my magazine.

Completed Double Page Article

After drafting my double page article a couple of times I managed to create an effective layout, using a bold image and masthead. I used the bright green to stand out against the dark page and highlight the certain text. Due to my research I have been able to follow typical conventions for a double page spread, for example using pull quotes to excite the reader about the article, and a bold main image to pull the reader in.

Overview Of Photoshoot

During the photoshoot I used a tripod to ensure my photos were sharp and in focus. As well as this I used lighting to light the models against the background, making them stand out.

Edited Photo

After selecting a suitable photo from my shoot, I used photoshop to make changes and make the photo as effective as possible. By making the photo black and white I believe this adds an intensity to the photo, making it more dramatic and making the models/artists stand out against the dark background. As well as this I have used curves to add tone to the image, highlighting the faces and main model.

Photoshoot Contact Sheet

During the first photoshoot I considered many aspects for my photographs such as angles, poses and lighting. I worked with a couple of different poses to try and best present a popular band, and tried to make one individual the main focus, this being the lead singer.

Photography Examples

I have selected a variety of photography examples that are relevant to the type of magazine and article I plan to produce, all of these are bold images focused on the artist or band, some black and white adding a sense of intensity to the image and some in colour making them vibrant and stand out more.

Six Strings Readership Profile

Mood Board

I have chosen to produce a pop/punk music magazine, mainly targeting females aged between 15 and 25. Not only will the magazine feature new and upcoming music of this genre, but also relevant fashion and products for the selected audience.

Genre Research

When aiming to please a specific target audience through the genre of your magazine, it is important to follow this genre as accurately as possible. For example a rock music magazine will be designed and laid out much differently to that of a celeb gossip magazine. I have researched some pop punk products, such as magazine covers, album covers and photoshoots to compare the features used and include these ideas in my magazine.

After looking at some relevant examples of pop punk products in the media industry I can take some similarities from these examples to use in the production of my magazine. Some similarities include the stance of the models/artists, in each example they're represented as powerful and respectable. As well as this the lack of colour is repeated in each one, however some splashes of colour are used to make certain features stand out. By considering some of these ideas used I can make my magazine as professional, as possible as well as making it follow the conventions of its genre.

Semiotic Analysis Of A Magazine Cover

I have analysed a popular magazine cover using semiotics, exploring the content of the cover such as the masthead, cover lines and main image to understand the audience the magazine is aimed at and what is done to these features to make them appealing to the target audience.

Completed Preliminary Task

My completed student magazine front cover follows the conventions of a typical magazine cover, using a masthead central image and cover lines. I think my cover will appeal to the student audience because I have made sure not to over complicate the page, making it seem boring, I have also included features that will interest a teenage audience, such as a puff offering the chance to 'win £50'.
My contents page also follows the conventions of a typical contents page. I have considered layout to ensure the page does not look too over crowded, I have also considered colour and fonts. To ensure the page doesn't look too busy I have followed a theme of blue and black, along with using just one font. I think by considering the layout and keeping the page simple this will appeal to a student audience, also the features mentioned such as part time jobs and competitions will interest the audience.

Student Magazine Market Researching & Planning

Preparing For The Front Cover

This is the original photo I took for my student magazine cover. When taking the photo I considered spacing around the model to ensure the face or main features were not covered by text, I also considered an interesting background that contrasted well with the model's black outfit.

This is my magazine cover photograph after I used Photoshop. I cropped the image slightly to make the model more central and I have also used the clone stamp tool to make the background seem less busy and over crowded, but still kept the colours and texture.

Photoshoot 1

For photoshoot one I had to take photos of events around the college, practicing framing and composition. When taking my photos I considered important features such as line, balance and framing.

Original Photo
Using Photoshop I cropped this image to remove some unwanted space and also to make the main subject more central. As well as this I worked with brightness, contrast and curves to make the photo more effective and appealing.

Preliminary Task

For the preliminary task we had to produce a magazine cover and contents page for a new college magazine. After doing research and taking our own photos we used Photoshop to edit them, cropping them to remove any unwanted space, adjusting them to make them more effective and appealing and also using the lasso and refine edge tool to cut out images. We produced our work in InDesign to get used to the software and used a grid layout to ensure everything was placed properly and effectively.
